Consigning

So I've read on other blogs that do surveys and such, that you all like to see what we buy at thrift stores, consignment stores, or flea markets, so I thought I'd show you what I've picked up in several different consignment stores since the new year began. I'll tell you the prices on the items I can remember, not to brag, but because I always like to see what people pay so I can determine whether or not I pay too much for comparable items.

I'm assuming these are spice jars, but I know they are old because of the feel of the glass. I paid a quarter a piece, so $3 total. I'm thinking of using them to hold glitter; however, I do wish they had holes (like a salt & pepper shaker) for that.

Believe it or not, I am not a "cow collector", but when I saw this pair of salt & pepper shakers ($6 for the pair), I couldn't resist their sweet faces. I think they're saying "eat more chicken!"

Speaking of salt & pepper shakers, if you remember back to my Christmas Santa collection, then you'll totally understand why these came home with me. I don't remember their price, but it was probably about the same as the cows.

You might have also figured out that I am tenderhearted. And I have a "rabbit problem" too. So, this cookie jar came home with me. Now, I don't think the mama is too pretty, but we know she can't help it. ;O) Her kids are what got me. They just look so mischievous that I knew they were calling my name. I don't remember what I paid for this, but it wasn't much either, because I was not "in love" with it.
I don't know why I've had a thing for ugly rabbits lately, but I brought him home too. I do an Easter tablescape with a few vintage rabbits and chicks, so I think I really bought him for that. Again, don't remember the price, but it wouldn't have been much!

As evidenced in my Christmas Present 2008 post, I have a "crystal problem" too...which I thought I had recovered from, but apparently, I haven't. I picked this etched crystal bowl up for $5.99, before tax. I wish I had some kind of big red hearts to put in it for Valentine's Day, but I'm still searching...

If I haven't told you before, my decorating style is "mixed up"...to put it nicely, or I guess some would say eclectic. It's a mix of traditional, country and tropical. Is that messed up or what? Well, this vase fits in with the tropical style. I think it was $9, and it's old...but not real old.
Now this thing, I hemmed and hawed about for months trying to decide if I like it, or if it's ugly. Then along came some magazine that showed them going for alot of money (either $40 or $70...but more than I'd pay). Then I went to Tuesday Morning and saw an apple one painted in burgundy and gold, similar to Royal Copenhagen, I believe?. I picked it up and it was over $100. I could not get it back on the shelf fast enough!! To be honest, I still don't know if I like it. Would you all please leave me a comment and tell me whether you think it's ugly or not? I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR OPINION. It had been like $15, and I got them to come down to $7.15 because it had sat there for several months. My friends husband told her one time that sometimes there is a reason things are "on sale"....implying they're reduced because they're ugly...hmmmmm.........................I think it's cute in a retro kind of way...I think.
And finally, this has to be one of my favorite finds....these 2 wire thingie dingies (I don't know what their official name is), but I paid $13 something for the 2 of them.

And I was one happy MAMA QUEEN! Thanks for stopping by today to look at my treasures!

***** I'm headed out of town for a few days to meet some fellow bloggers, so I won't be visiting again until Sunday, but I'll be sure to catch up with you ALL when I return! LOL & have a wonderful weekend. We're finally thawing out in the South!

As for the questionable green thing?... I don't know what it is, but I definitely like it. It needs just the right setting to make it shine and to allow it to show off it's hidden beauty. I think it would be a great Spring and Summer decoration.

You found some great things. I actually really like that little "ugly bunny", he'll be really cute in a vintage Easter tablescape. The crystal bowl was a steal! And the green mystery jar - in the right place I think it would look great. But I can see where you are torn - Kathy

You have really found some great treasures! I have not hit the shops since Christmas and that was all for other people!!! I think I will have to do a little shopping this weekend.

Call me crazy, but I love the green centerpiece. I don't think it would be great just stuck in the middle of a table, but nestled with some other things it would be a great pop of green. (I saw one of those burgundy ones at Tuesday Morning also!) :D Jewel

You know I enjoy seeing thrift finds...thanks for sharing your's!

Love your S&P skakers. I don't do cows either but those are soo cute! And the Mr & Mrs Santa shakers are fabulous.

Your little bunny looks demented but fun. *grins* Love that crystal bowl!

As for the fruit piece....that's a tough call as it is, just this side of ugly. ;o) I think it could work in your beach cottage though...w/ a tropical backdrop it could be stunning. You could also paint it cream & glaze it to antique it.

Forgot tell you that I am heading to Pier 1 today to see about that bell cloche, you said you saw at one. Cross your fingers that they have one for me!

I love your finds, but HONESTLY -- I want you to show pictures of your storage area. I can't imagine where you store all of your Christmas stuff alone. lol

Ok, the green apple thing had to grow on me at first, but then I liked it. I think the color took me off guard, but that color is really "in" now. So really, I DO like it.

The bunny jar is adorable. ;o)

You are too cute.

Oh man, just loooove going treasure hunting at the thriftstores. I have had a hankerin' to go do just that for a while.
Your treasures were great!
You know I am a junk junkie, right? I've been working on my addiction lately because I have a tendency to want to adopt all of the little orphans that others have discarded. My new motto is, I don't buy it unless I look at it and absolutely fall in love with it! If I have to question myself for even a moment, I put it back. I just have so much in my house that I have to really be selective if I want to add to my possesions.. I'm not trying to discourage you from buyin', but just a kind warning from someone like me that has let it get a little too far.
On that note, I think I'm headin' out to goodwill! ;0)

You are good at finding things.
I don't know what to think of the green fruit, I don't dislike it or like it, I'm neutral. :)

Hehe...I just had so much fun saying that! Just wanted to stop by and see what you've been up to...so glad that you came by my place for a visit and thank you for the compliments of all my grandchildren!

Wow...I think you found some great things in 2008! I especially like your iron tower "thingies" as you put it...hehe!!! You can use them in so many ways...love em'!!! I also like your bunnies and can't wait to see you use them in an Easter tablescape!

Okay...you're asking opinions about the lime green fruit topiary...I love it!!! I can't tell by the photo how big it is but I think it would make a great centerpiece for a tablescape!!! It would be especially pretty for a "Spring" tablescape...I think it's a keeper!!!

Have great weekend, my friend!

I like everything.
I really like the green tree the best. Check out my Roo table post and you will see my Green Grape S/P shackers from Cracker Barrel. They remind of the tree a little. I also have the matching cake stand.
I like the wire stands and the cows too.
Nice finds!

I love "eclectic" decor. The items you chose are wonderful. The green tree could be used in tablescapes or groupings. It would tie in to many different styles. Since I tend to head this way too I find that rotating my stuff by the month, holiday or seasons helps to keep my home fresh looking and when I pull out something it is like meeting it all over again.

Hey Tar - I love all your goodies.

The fruit thing is esp. great - and like everyone else - in the right place - will be fabo!

I'm esp. like the wire things - they are right up my alley!!

Michael's had some medium size hearts with glitter that would look good in your crystal bowl - they might still have some - they were 6 each to a pack for $2.

Hi Tar! I love all your recent goodies. Good thing I don't live close or I would take the little rocking chair Santa & Mrs. off your hands! I LOVE the ceramic fruit tree thingy. You MUST keep it. Very 70's, will go very well in your eclectic home.

Have fun meeting up with your buddies!

Hello,
I just found your blog through 'The Muse'. I love to thrift shop too! Isn't it fun? You got a lot of great things! I love the tall green fruit thing. I would probably paint it a creamy ivory. I love the crystal bowl too. Come by for a visit sometimes. I just put some thrift store finds on there.
Nice to meet you,

The "green thing" sent me to my "Dictionary of the Decorative Arts" where I may spend all morning...the question is will you enjoy using it? It has potential and I agree with the Prof, it would look good in a tablescape with black. The color is unexpected and might be fun.

I love treasure hunting :)

Your green thing? I don't think it's ugly. I think in the right setting it could be great. It's not really my style, but it's definitely not ugly :)

The spice jars are awesome! And I put glitter in old jars with shakers and it doesn't come out very well, so it's probably just as well yours don't have shaker tops.
